Ugly

Well, it sure has been some time since we've updated this blog. Since we've last wrote, much has happened. Let me summarize:
  • Dani had a birthday
  • We got married
  • We honeymooned
  • Went to the U.S.
  • Randy had a birthday
  • Dani caught her first fish
  • Ate Lobster in Maine
  • Went to Sea World and Mexico
  • Found out we were pregnant
  • Told our family about the child to come at our U.S. wedding reception
  • Visited several family, friends, churches and National Parks
  • Saw Cesar, Monica and the triplets in San Francisco
  • Thanksgiving feast in Colorado
  • Returned to Bolivia
  • Christmas and New Years
  • Another Dani birthday
  • Xander born a couple weeks ago
OK, that gets you up to speed more or less. And now on to the main subject of this email: my mustache.

First off, let me make it very clear that I think it is ugly. So does Dani. Especially Dani. The point of growing a mustache is not to look good (although at different points in history that might have been the case, or people might have at least thought that was the case). I've been very impressed by the politeness of the Bolivians as I grow the stache. I don't know if they just don't find it funny or maybe even think it is guapo, but no one says anything. I'm sure if I were in the U.S. I would get comments everywhere... mostly things like: "That is gross!"

So on Friday mornings I meet with several guys to talk through life. We try to carry each other's burdens and challenge each other to be better husbands, fathers and leaders. It was Santiago from that group (his name has been changed to protect his innocence) that came up with the idea of honoring the birth of Xander by growing mustaches for the month of April. Why that's honoring, and why we went along with it is still a mystery, but that is the explanation.

In the meantime, since I'm also sporting some longer-than-normal hair (a self imposed challenge for one year since my last birthday), I thought it would be good to buy some nice high socks and see how I would look if I was born a couple decades earlier.

So, on April 26 at Xander's dedication at our church, I hope to snap and send you some great photos of all the ugly mustaches. Until then, have a good one.

Oh, and right now it is sunny and hailing in La Paz.
